Years of
Service
Ashar Alo, a non-government organization, was a culmination of efforts of few young enthusiastic social workers and entrepreneurs in the south-western parts of Bangladesh to address the pressing needs of the community which were resulted from recurrent occurrence of natural disasters, poor socio-economic conditions of the area, gradual decrease of people’s access from the natural resources. These group efforts that started in 1994 received more organized non- political and non-profitable organizational structure in its actions in 2001 and 2006 through the registration with Social Welfare Department and NGO Affairs Bureau respectively of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. The Ray of Hope, the English meaning of the word Ashar Alo, reflects the actions that the group of volunteers perform to help out communities so that they are capable, better equipped to address their different forms of vulnerabilities and at the same time could progress towards a respectful life. Ashar Alo believes that addressing inequalities that currently exists in the society, ensuring better access of people to resources/services, better health, livelihoods and food security, nutrition and education for the children, good governance, disaster risk reduction, maintaining sound ecosystems and environmental resources may foster people’s initiatives to develop their own resilience to cope with uncertainties. The organization pay huge importance in developing and designing local action plans in accordance with global key instruments like MDG, Hyogo Framework of Action, UNFCCC initiatives. The organization believes that combining local knowledge and local needs with national level development principles and global instruments is the key to achieve sustainable improvements of the community and their institutions. Ensuring equality in the society, promotion of human rights and justice, establishing a democratic, fear- free society are the principles that the organization Ashar Alo aims to achieve through different project actions it performs
